Our hornbeam is proudly grown and crafted from the Chaldean Estate woodlands.
Nestled in the heart of Hertfordshire, the Chaldean Estate was established 25 years ago, spanning 2500 acres with 250 acres of ancient semi-natural woodland. This historic woodland, managed through coppicing, has long provided invaluable timber for shipbuilding, wartime efforts, and more. Among its treasures is hornbeam, a resilient native tree of southern UK, renowned for its exceptionally hard timber. Historically, hornbeam has powered chariots, ox yokes, and even gunpowder production, showcasing its remarkable versatility and enduring legacy.
Nurturing Wildlife Through Sustainable Coppicing
Today, hornbeam serves primarily as premium firewood. Under a woodland management plan approved by the Forestry Commission, the estate reintroduces coppicing to foster diverse habitats that support thriving wildlife.
Introducing HoundBeam
To make use of the smaller timber, we introduced HoundBeam natural dog chews, crafted from our sustainably managed woodland. Each year, we responsibly fell 250-300 tonnes of timber, roughly 1 tonne per acre, to maintain our sustainability goals.
Our Natural Dog Chew
HoundBeam chews offer a natural and safe alternative for your dog, free from harmful compounds, providing a safe and enjoyable chewing experience.
